WHO IS THE RECOVERY COURSE FOR?
The Recovery Course is for men and women who are struggling with addictions that are causing significant problems in their life, who want to invest in their road to recovery and who live in or around the Richmond / Twickenham / Hampton area. The course has proved itself effective in helping people with a broad range of addictions, such as drugs, alcohol, pornography, sex, gambling, self-harming, over-eating or other related compulsive behaviours.
Many have found it a good place to start on recovery – and equally effective for those who have been working on recovery for years but who would like to take a fresh look at the steps from a Christian perspective. While it does offer a Christian perspective it is open and has been of value to people of all faiths and none.
WHAT IS THE PURPOSE OF THE COURSE AND WHAT IS IT BASED ON?
The primary purpose of the Recovery Course is to provide practical insight and support to help both men and women on the path to freedom from the grip of addiction. It is based on the 12 Step Programme used for 75 years by Alcoholics Anonymous and many other 12 step programmes, and incorporates teaching and wisdom from the Bible. It has been developed and has been run at Holy Trinity Brompton over the last 7 years by people who are themselves in recovery from addiction.
HOW IS THE COURSE STRUCTURED?
The course consists of 16 evening sessions which build on each other, working though the 12 steps.
The evenings are well structured, with time for a simple meal, a brief presentation to introduce a topic and bring insights from other addicts, followed by a chaired discussion in small groups. Printed notes relating to the presentation are available to take away.
At the end of each evening additional material will be made available to help with further personal reflection. It is not essential to use this to benefit from the course, but many people have found that giving time to work on the questions raised has proved particularly helpful in their road to recovery. The amount of time you take is up to you.
WHERE AND WHEN WILL IT BE HELD?
The course will be held at The Warehouse, St John’s, Hampton Wick, KT1 4AL. There is parking next to the Warehouse, and buses stop by Hampton Wick Train Station, which is 5 minutes walk away.
Sessions will be on Monday evenings, 7.00pm to 9.30pm.
Sessions 1 to 10: Monday 15th October through to Monday 17th December
Sessions 11 to 16: Monday 7th January through to Monday 11th February 2019
WHO IS ORGANISING THIS COURSE?
The course is being sponsored by St Stephen’s Church, Twickenham and St John’s Church Hampton Wick, and is supported by a number of other churches in the area.
It has been organised by a group of Christian men and women from a number of churches in SW London, all of whom are in various stages of recovery from a range of addictions and have personal experience of the Recovery Programme.
WHAT WILL IT COST?
The St John’s and St Stephen’s churches are covering the cost of the rooms and printed materials. Guests will be asked to contribute to the cost of food and refreshments.
